Italy as a Tourist Destination

Italy remains to be one of the foremost tourist attractions thanks to its rich history, culture, cuisine, and innovative fashion and art. Italy is a European country that sits pristinely on the Mediterranean coast and it has a long, rich history that dates back to ancient times. Italy’s influence on the Western world is undeniable, not only with its military tactics (the Roman’s once conquered a large portion of the world) but its cuisine and culture. Italy is home to many tourist attractions, culinary delights, and rich knowledge. It is home to the Vatican, where thousands of Christians make the pilgrimage; the Colosseum, where daring men fought lions; the snowy Alps and the scenic Lake Como; and the Amalfi coast, where tourists can flock to the beaches and live la dolce vita.

Ancient Italy

The ancient Romans were known for their military might, political mindedness, and social institutions. It was an empire that conquered much of the world from 8 BC to 5 AD. Ancient Rome has many sites that are still intact (or partially intact) today, and they receive hordes of visitors year-round. These are the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon. No volcano is better known than Mt. Vesuvius, which destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD. The eruption may have destroyed these sights but has preserved many treasures, such as frescoes, sculptures, and mosaics. The site remains open to locals and tourists to enjoy a moment of history captured and preserved in lava.

Rome

Rome has long been depicted in all art forms, from the films of Federico Fellini to the paintings by Michelangelo. Everywhere one looks in Rome, they will find a site full of wonder and surprises. Take the Pantheon, an architectural achievement of the Roman Empire remains intact to this day and, while it’s the burial place of Raphael and many Italian Kings, it is enjoyed by many tourists. Pick up a slice of pizza and wander a little further to the Trevi Fountain, a monumental piece of architecture that has been photographed more times than any other architectural creation, or make a detour to The Spanish Steps, another popular tourist attraction.

Venice

Italy boasts 58 UNESCO World Heritage sites, and Venice and its Lagoon is one of them. Romance, gondolas, delicious pasta – these are the iconic sights of Venice, the small town in the northern parts of Italy that has seen more people travel through it than any other city around the world. One of the most visited sites of Venice is St. Mark’s Basilica, a façade and dome that looks over the Piazza San Marco. The building is a work of art, inspired by Byzantine culture. For the romantics, a gondola ride through the Grand Canal with a bottle of wine and a platter of cheese shared with a loved one is the epitome of romance, and many tourists flock to Venice to experience such a treat.

Italy Artwork

When you think Italian artwork, your first thought is probably Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael, the High Renaissance artists who each have a body of work that remains iconic even centuries after their deaths. Then there are the many museums and galleries to enjoy, like the Uffizi in Florence and the Borghese Gallery in Rome. Some institutional buildings boast works of art worthy of being in any museum, like the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, the many frescoes and mosaics around the city. Within our collection is a number Italian wall art by such as artists as da Vinci and Michelangelo to enjoy in your home or office. There’s also work by admirers and visitors of Italy, such as Childe Hassam, Ivan Aivazovsky, and watercolours by Vinxent Valera.
