What is cultural art?

Cultural prints represent the customs and values of a society, from the ancient world to the modern. Cultural arts have a priceless value in helping us understand the world in which we live, doing so through creative means. There is an inherent value in exposing one's self to the customs of different cultures.

Examples of Cultural Art

Native American Art

Native American art is the art of the indigenous people that inhabit what is known today as the Americas – North, Central, and South America. The Native Americans were vastly creative, expressing themselves with painting, totem poles, textiles, and basketry. Some of the notable features of Native American cultural art is the feathered headdress, hide garments, carved totem poles, masks, and a number of other art forms. The headdress, also known as a war bonnet, is traditionally worn by the leaders of the American Plains Indians, who inhabit North America. Another notable cultural symbol of Native American art is the dreamcatcher, used to ward away evil spirits.

Aboriginal Art

Aboriginal art is the art made by the indigenous inhabitants of Australia. It’s a very important style of art as it provides people with a unique insight into the culture of Aboriginal Australians. One of the best-known characteristics of Aboriginal art is the use of dots, which was used to hide messages from non-Indigenous people. The dot technique varies from tribe to tribe, and not every Aboriginal tribe can adopt this technique. Aboriginal cave art can also be found across natural sites in Australia, from the Kimberley in Western Australia, Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory, to Bunjil Shelter in the Grampians, Victoria.

African Art

African art encompasses the modern and ancient visual art of native and indigenous inhabitants of the continent of Africa. Themes of African art include human figures, animals, symbols, the spiritual realm, rites of passage. Traditional objects, like wooden masks representing either humans or animals, are the typical art of western Africa. African art had a significant impact on Western art, specifically on the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, who took elements of this art form and applied them to his work.

Biblical Art

Biblical art is a type of religious artform concerning the Judeo-Christian religion. Themes of biblical art centre on the Old Testament and the New Testament of the bible. Biblical art is an important element of cultural art as it keeps the religious traditions alive and easily tells the stories of the religion. Some of the greatest names in art created masterpieces on the themes of the bible, such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, and Salvador Dali.

Ancient Egypt

While the Ancient Egyptians are known for idolising cats, they also created art in many mediums, like painting, sculpture, architecture. Most of the art created was culturally significant and symbolic. Anubis was a god with the head of a jackal and the body of a man. He was a figure of the afterworld, presiding over the mummification process and accompanying dead kings through a safe passage. The Ancient Egyptians had many materials at their disposal, such as papyrus paper. The mask of Tutankhamun is a highly stylised mask made of gold, glass, and precious stones.

Ancient Greece

All across Greece, from its idyllic islands to its dusty capital of Athens, one can find jewels from the ancient past. One of these jewels is the Caryatids statues, which represented the women of Caryae. These divine women are believed to have been sculpted by Alkamenes. View our Greek wall art.
